Engaging Enrichment Classes Foster Individual Interests and Confidence

In addition to a full curriculum of daily art, music, and dramatic play classes integrated with academic studies, Mustard Seed also offers further opportunities for instruction after school nurturing discovery and development of a student’s special interests and talents.

Enrichment classes may be divided into two categories: Private music lessons and Specials. Mustard Seed facilitates private instrumental lessons in guitar, piano, percussion, flute, violin, viola, and more for students in Grades 1-8. Instrumental instruction is conducted on a yearly schedule that is set in late August. A private payment agreement between the teacher and the family, Mustard Seed provides the space and instruments, secures the teachers, and requires the background checks. Most of the teachers have worked in partnership with Mustard Seed for years. In the spring, these students perform in a two-day recital on campus for family and friends.

On a second track, students are also offered course options after school in a variety of subjects that change every quarter.

For Spring 2020, MSS art teachers created a new series on Large Scale Mural & Painting that considered a scale beyond the possibilities of regular art classes. Designed for Grades K-5, the first day of the session featured an experienced muralist MSS alum and college student who discussed his process and projects. Children learned how to draw a plan and scale it up. Rather than a stationary wall, they painted on plywood. At the end of the series, students and teachers celebrated with an evening art show of their work and each child brought home their own large-scale piece ready to hang.

We also partnered with BRICKS 4 KIDZ for a STEM-focused LEGO® Engineering seminar where students collaborated in pairs to design and construct a motorized model employing bricks and robotics.
