Our eighth grade students will be graduating soon. We’re running a blog series so that you can get to know them a little bit before they go and see where they’ll be attending high school. (You can’t miss it–they’re holding signs!)
Here’s the first of four blogs highlighting eighth grade students. (You can find the second here, the third here, and the fourth here. ) Thanks for being a part of the Mustard Seed community; for supporting these students and cheering them on!
Gabe (St. Peter’s Prep; Sheehan Scholar)
Gabe’s looking forward to studying music and hopes that he’ll meet more musicians and composers at St. Peter’s Prep. But he also likes science, writing, mathematics, music and art. He’s not yet sure what he wants to pursue as a career, but he knows that he wants to be a productive worker. A co-worker who helps others.
If Gabe could live in the world of a book it would be Life of Pi by Yann Martel. He would live with Pi Patel and be a friend to him after his harsh journey across the ocean.
Evelyn (Notre Dame)
One day, Evelyn hopes to become a teacher. She’s appreciated the opportunities to take on leadership roles at Mustard Seed. They’ve allowed her to develop relationships with younger student and discover her calling.
At times, Evelyn says, she’s struggled with paying attention in school. MSS teachers helped her get back on track and stay focused. And whether she had problems in school or outside of school, she found that she could always share them with a MSS teacher. She knows the her teachers pray for her and support her.
Math is a subject that she’s looking forward to studying at Notre Dame. And one day, she hopes to travel to France.
Aidan (St. Peter’s Prep)
Reflecting on what his MSS teachers might say about him, Aidan settles on the words leader and determined. Back in 5th grade, when he was struggling in math, he spoke to his parents. He received extra help in the subject, and now math’s his favorite subject. As far as exploring a new subject in high school, Aidan’s interested in Latin. (And he’ll get to take it! It’s a requirement at St. Peter’s Prep, where he’ll be a freshman in the fall.)
For Aidan, the funniest thing that happens at Mustard Seed School are the birthday skits that the eighth grade puts on once a month in Middle School worship. A highlight of his learning experience at MSS is the three-day overnight trips to Spruce Lake outdoor education center.
To incoming students and parents, Aidan gives this advice: stay on track, have fun, and listen to your teachers.
Mireya (High Tech High School)
At High Tech High School, Mireya expects to learn more about herself and continue to grow bolder and more confident. She’s learned to express herself at Mustard Seed and would like to thank her MSS teachers for their encouragement, especially during challenging times.
As a culinary arts major in high school, Mireya will be learning new cooking skills. One day, she’d like to own her own restaurant or bakery. And as for travel, Italy’s on her mind. For the food and language, of course!
Looking back at her time at MSS, she enjoyed teaching mini term classes. They showed her how teaching can be both fun and hard. (And gave her new appreciation for her own teachers!)
Watch the MSS blog to meet more of our eighth grade students. Can’t wait to know where they’re all heading to high school? That’s okay! Here’s a one-minute video reveal.
