Fine Arts

Programs, philosophy, and school life

Visual arts are part of the curriculum starting in Kindergarten.

Drama, speech and theatre are an extension of classroom learning.

The fine and performing arts have been at the heart of the Mustard Seed tradition since its doors first opened in 1979. The school consciously aims for each student to develop skilled perspective and creative expression through daily experience in the arts.

At Mustard Seed, training in the visual arts is fully integrated into the curriculum beginning with the architecture of block building in the Kindergarten through use of the elements of classical Islamic art and painting of Russian icons in art classes for older students.

Drama, speech and theatre are an integral part of every student's education. Drama may be a spontaneous expression with classmates in the Shared Space area, or guided instruction in a drama class. Drama classes promote expressive use of the body and voice in the communication of ideas; foster cooperation and mutual respect; develop fluency, imagination and concentration; build confidence; and provide an alternative way to explore other curriculum content.

Music Education at Mustard Seed School is based on the educational pedagogy of the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967). The goal of Kodaly philosophy is to lead children to love of great music by vigorous exposure to authentic folk music and parallel instruction in musical literacy. Since the first instrument of this instruction is the human voice, singing is often heard in the school's classrooms and halls. Older students study baroque recorder and music theory. Instrumental instruction in violin and piano is offered after school.

The choral program at Mustard Seed School consists of two choirs which perform a wide repertoire of folk, classical and global music. The choruses perform approximately fifteen times each year, in major concert halls including Carnegie Hall in New York City, and in local venues including community events, churches and other schools. Each year Mustard Seed students perform for and with the women of the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility. Mustard Seed School has been host to the Children's Bach Festival, which brings young musicians together from throughout the Metropolitan area to perform the music of J.S. Bach.
