BehaviorPositive recognition, clear expectationsThe small size of our school allows teachers and staff to know students personally.
Students are recognized positively for their achievements and contributions, fostering a feeling of competence and, on a deeper level, nurturing self worth. Each child is acknowledged as a valuable member of the school community and is expected to contribute positively to the community. Self-confidence comes when students feel good about themselves and contribute to the group. At Mustard Seed School children can be encouraged to risk and feel safe. Consistently high performance is expected from the children proportional to their abilities in punctuality, homework, instrumental practice, behavior in public, and treatment of others. Discipline is key to getting work done, respecting each other, and functioning smoothly as a community. Order is maintained by a firm sense of authority that is fair and consistent. It is emphasized that every person has the right to be heard and deserves the full attention of the class. Ultimately, order comes from a healthy interaction between teachers and students who want to work together. The full and fast-paced day prevents lulls that could inspire mischief. Within this structure, students are entrusted with considerable responsibility for their own behavior. |
