Celebrations

Mustard Seed is a school that loves to celebrate!

Community Celebrations

angelOver thirteen times throughout the year, students gather together as a whole school to celebrate the goodness of God. These celebrations become traditions as we relive these experiences year after year. In the Fall we celebrate the Jewish feasts of Rosh Hashanah, Succoth, Simchat Torah. Before our November break there is a Thanksgiving Play. At Christmas, we join in a Latin American celebration of Las Posadas and of the Three Kings on Epiphany. We observe Lent with Ash Wednesday, which leads to Holy Week with special worship times of a Palm Celebration, The Way of the Cross, and a Passover Meal. The Easter Season brings us to Ascension and Pentecost.

Parents are invited to join us in these events. Each class in the school is responsible for hosting one of the celebrations. The celebrations recognize the diversity of cultures that make up our school and the unity that we have in the one God who loves us.

Celebrating Each Child

birthday book presentationOne of the ways we celebrate our students is by acknowledging their birthdays. Each child is honored with a book presented to the library in the student's name. These books are carefully chosen by the staff to represent the child's interests or a topic of study in his or her class. Teachers present students with a book during community worship on the day of or a day near to their birthday. Children with birthdays in July or August receive a book on their half birthday.

Another time of public celebration of our students is during Commencement. At this ceremony, teachers present each student in the lower school with a button. On this button is a character quality of the child that has been a gift to the child’s class. One student might be recognized for being a math-lover, another for being brave, another for being kind, and another for being a problem-solver. Similarly, teachers present upper school students with a certificate that recognizes a character quality and academic achievement.
